About Temple
Outside the Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple, the temples in the four directions within the city of Madurai are known as the Inner Avaranam. Similarly there are four temples outside Madurai city and in four directions. These are known as outer coverings.
Outside the city of Madurai, the temples are Tiruparangunram in the south, Thiruvedakam in the west, Tiruvappanur in the north and Tiruppuvanam in the east. These are called the outer cover. Similarly, within the city of Madurai, Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is situated in the north direction of the old Sokkanathar Temple where Kuberan was worshipped, in the west direction there is the Immaiil Dharavar Temple where the Lord Shiva consecrated himself, in the east direction of the Airavata Nallur Muktheeswarar Temple where the white elephant is worshipped, and in the south direction of Tenthiruvalavai Temple where Eman is worshipped. All these are inner enclosure temples.
The temple of Meenakshi Amman Sametha in the name of Madhyapuri Ambal, which is considered to be the honor of worshiping the God who gives good things in this place, is located on Melamasi Road. The auspicious temple of Immai is situated in the south-west direction of Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple.
