Alagarkovil is one of the Vaishnavist temples in Tamilnadu State, which is disclosed in the songs of Alwars. This is comprised within Melur taluk of Madurai district and located in North North East direction from Madurai and situates in the latitude of 10.5 and longitude of 78.14 There are no people residences adjacent to the temple except staff quarters. Recently it is named as Alagarkoil Panchayat consists of the nearby villages of Valayapatti, Konavarayan and Ayathapatti.
Mr. T.V.Sathasiva Pandarathar says referred by inscription that Eraniyamutta Nadu refers one of the sub division of Pandyan Region and this large place consist Anai Malai, Alagarkoil (Thirumalrincholai) etc. villages situate North East of Madurai City As one inscription refers in Alagarkoil that Keelaraniya Muttathu Thirumalrincholai
